Prof. Dr. Aykut Özdarendeli, Director of Erciyes University Vaccine Research and Development Center (ERAGEM), and his team successfully cultured the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, from a sample taken from a COVID-19 positive patient under Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) conditions using a cell culture system.
According to a written statement from Erciyes University, following an invitation from TÜSEB, affiliated with the Ministry of Health, to prepare a strategic R&D project for COVID-19 vaccine development, Özdarendeli and his team successfully produced the SARS-CoV-2 virus from a sample of a COVID-19 positive patient under Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) conditions in a cell culture system.
